A brief post this evening. . . .

We have had many people ask us ‘where’ in Mexico this Merida and Progreso, and other small towns that we talk about are.  .in particular Chelem - where we are purchasing our property. . . All are in the Mexican state of Yucatan. .

part of the Yucatan showing Merida, Progreso and some areas aroundProgreso is about a 30 minute drive to the north of Merida. . along a very impressive stretch of modern four lane highway. . .At the time we were there construction was underway to expand the road (MEX 261) into an eight lane expressway. . .And - this highway is ‘lit’ the whole length of it!!. . not to mention the beautiful landscaping and artistic dividers/retainers that caught our eye. . Progress is indeed being made swiftly to allow for the number of ‘expats’ already moving into the area. . . and more - many more - are expected to follow suit. . .

Many of the other roads that we traveled on were just as nice, smaller of course, but modern and well kept. . . In the small towns along the coast there are some dirt and gravel roads that are quite rough. . .but, we have plenty of those back home here too!!. . (in Montague County, Texas). . But the major thoroughfares from one town to the next are well kept . . .

Chelem is to the west of Progreso, between the two villages of Yucalpeten and Churburna. . . this area is one of the lesser expensive places to look for property. . . beyond in this direction are more small towns and a nature preserve - with the town of Celestun located within this preserve, known for the flamingos that flock there. . .keep following the coast in that direction, and you will eventually end up in Texas. . . of course, with a lot of distance and towns along the way. . .

To the east of Progreso is Chicxulub - ‘purported’ to be a more exclusive area, and thus more expensive. . beyond in this direction are several more small villages and the larger town of Telchac Puerto which has a number of modern conveniences. . . . continue on around the peninsula and you will run into Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel - to name just a few of the many . . .

For more information on any of the towns, and on just about any subject you want to know about the area, Yucatan Today is the place to see. . .
